Submitted by Hamdani Amin on Friday, 25 July 2008No Comment
announced the launch of Knol on 23 July 2008, a Wikipedia-esque site that hosts articles from contributors. hopes the articles become among the most authoritative on the Web — which represents a direct challenge to media sites.

Yesterday launched opened up and launched Google Knol. I had read many mix reaction toward this launched. on Problogger think Knol will compete against their own partners’ and kill small publisher before it’s hurts wikipedia. He moves on saying that Knol might became a spam heaven although in due time mechanism to control will be put in place (read the full review here).
Knol –short for “knowledge– is ’s Wikipedia-esque site that hosts authoritative articles on a wide variety of subjects. Knol recruits contributors to write articles on subjects such as medical conditions, sports and more. authors earn by running campaigns on their content. Knol also offers a suite of collaboration tools that allows other users to suggest changes to the original . - Journalistopia.com

Danny Sanchez on journalistopia.com think this move had deviate from the original lines of of .  It’s a clear indication that has became media sites that competes directly with other media sites.  move to make Knol as an authoritative articles about specific topic will put Knol on direct competitiontopic specific, web columnist and short articles websites like about.com and wikipedia (read the full here).

I agree with both of them when the definition of “authoritative” had been define by algorithm and standard.  will have and always have unfair advantage over other sites even if using in-house content or public generated content.

I too had known few people that had made quite a substantial income and profiles under squidoo and I’ll suspect I’ll the same thing happen with Knol.

In fact, I of starting my Knol.  Its’ unproductive wheather will kill whom or favor whom.  We should emulate and embrace move.  Like what Jeff Jarvis at Buzzmachines indicate, ’s endeavors at hosting and creating content doesn’t mean sites can’t continue the symbiotic relationship with search engines.

Furthermore the fact that we and make our contente available online already made us deviate from traditional media.  It’s something interesthing to watch and see.

Do you think will affect you blogging?
