Many consideration came into choosing the right domain name for your business, I have express my opinion on this matter. While other may agreed to my opinion, but the important question remain:

What considerations we have to made in selection of domain name?

Let me briefly list down what are the consideration we have to made in selection of domain name:

1. Business specific VS Keyword Rich VS Brandable Domain Name. A good definition of keyword rich and brandable domain could be found at one of Darren post. Naming a site after its domain name for the simple reason that when people think of your website, they’ll think of it by name.   If your name is also your URL, they’ll automatically know where to go.   Naming a site according to keyword rich will help search engines take a good look at the words in your domain name when deciding what your blog is about and how to rank it.   Naming a website according to brandable name equally important, easily remember like yahoo, google and streamxy.
2. Long or short domain name. Long domain name that have your site keywords in them also have an advantage in that they fare better in a number of search engines.  While short domain name can easily be remember. This can be difficult since many short domains are already registered.
3. Hyphenated Names? There is a lot of disadvantage in using hyphenated names.  People tend to easy to forget the hyphen and prone to misspell. While it can be good, in theory, for search engine rankings, it will take away from the overall branding value of your site.
4. “The” and “my” form domain name.  If you take “the’ and “my” in your domain name, you should always promote your domain name in full, for example “thecakehouse.com” rather than “Cake House”.
5. Avoid trademark when you choose a domain name. If you choose a domain name that conflicts with any one of the millions of commercial names that already exist, you risk losing it.  A trademark name however will gave your a free promotion thus a free traffic as a result of promotion done by the trademark owner.
6. What extension, dot.com, dot.net or dot.org? Personally I don’t believe you should stick to dot.com or any particular extension.  While there are many arguments, I still think the best consideration would be based on your business intention.  If you plan to operate just locally then it’s make sense to have geographically description domain like dot.com.au, dot.co.uk or dot.com.my.  After all if your business is about cake house, you don’t expect your customer make order through cakehouse.com which suggest a US or international site.

This considerations is not exclusive.  Domain name like Problogger (Professional+Blogger) and Streamxy (Fast And Responsive Connectivity) are quite brandable.  However is not always possible to get brandable name nowaday as it get harder and harder to get.  Many blogger need to be more creative in choosing a brandable name yet memorable.

So back to our question - What considerations we have to made in selection of domain name?
